Guatemalan National Indicted for Reentering US After Deportation
BOSTON – Mario Lopez, a 35-year-old Guatemalan national, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for illegally reentering the United States after deportation.
Lopez was charged with one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien, a charge that provides for a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
According to the charging documents, Lopez was deported from the United States on Dec. 8, 2010 after an assault conviction in Maryland.
It is alleged that sometime after his removal, Lopez attempted to return to the United States twice in 2022 but was denied entry. Sometime after that, Lopez unlawfully reentered the United States.
Lopez was arrested and charged by criminal complaint in March 2025 and has been detained pending trial. Immigration and Customs Enforcement became aware of Lopez’s unlawful presence in the United States following arrests in November 2023, March 2024 and December 2024.
United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director, Boston, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations made the announcement today. Assistant U.S. Attorney John J. Reynolds of the Criminal Division is prosecuting the case.
The details contained in the charging documents are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
