Tax Preparer Sentenced to 51 Months for Tax Fraud
Dallas, Texas – Mario Melendez, a tax return preparer, has been sentenced to 51 months in prison for conspiring to defraud the United States and aiding in the preparation of false tax returns.
According to court documents, Melendez, a manager at Uptown Multi Services, helped prepare fraudulent income tax returns for clients, including false education credits, Schedule C expenses, and other items. He also assisted in trainings instructing new employees how to prepare fraudulent tax returns.
The IRS – Criminal Investigations unit conducted the investigation, which revealed that Melendez’s actions caused a loss of over $1 million to the U.S. government.
Melendez’s sentence is a result of his guilty plea to one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States and one count of aiding in the preparation of false tax returns.
The case against Melendez is a reminder of the importance of ensuring that tax preparers are held accountable for their actions.
As part of his sentence, Melendez will also serve two years of supervised release and pay a fine of $100,000.
