Marshalltown, Iowa – A registered nurse in Marshalltown has been handed a six-month federal prison sentence for systematically diverting controlled substances from patients at two local hospitals. Amanda Nicole Manatt, 37, was caught stealing fentanyl, hydromorphone, and morphine while employed as an emergency room nurse.
According to court documents, Manatt worked at Unity Point Marshalltown Hospital before obtaining a new position at Mary Greely Medical Center in January 2024. During her time at both facilities, she falsified patient records, claiming that the painkillers were administered when they were not, allowing her to take them for personal use.
The deceitful scheme not only caused patients suffering but also led to overbilling healthcare benefit programs. In some cases, patients experienced increased pain due to Manatt’s theft of their prescription drugs. In others, she took more medication than necessary from the patients.
Manatt’s employment at Mary Greely Medical Center ended in April 2024, and her criminal activities were uncovered following an investigation by the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL) Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU), the Tama County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa Insurance Fraud Bureau.
Upon completing her prison term, Manatt will be under supervised release for three years. The federal system does not offer parole. In addition to her prison sentence, she has been ordered to pay $5,258.20 in restitution, a fine of $5,500, and a special assessment of $300.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal announced the sentencing, emphasizing the severity of Manatt’s crimes. The investigation into this case serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers within the healthcare industry when trust is breached.
