MASSACHUSETTS – A monumental victory for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe was achieved this week as United States Attorney Rachael S. Rollins announced the successful pursuit and securing of $209,687.54 in restitution against corrupt tribal leaders John Cromwell and James DeQuattro.
“The Mashpee Wampanoags put their trust in Mr. Cromwell when they elected him to represent them,” Attorney Rollins stated. “Mr. Cromwell violated and exploited that trust, lining his own pockets through a fraudulent business arrangement with Mr. DeQuattro.”
This fraud corrupted and stalled the tribe\\’s most significant economic development project, leading to substantial delays and loss of resources. In April 2023, a federal jury saw through their lies and found Cromwell and DeQuattro guilty of their actions.
“Last spring, a federal jury saw through the lies and found the defendants guilty of their shameful conduct,” Rollins recounted. “They were later held accountable at sentencing in November, with Mr. Cromwell receiving a three-year sentence.”
The restitution judgment, which directly impacts the Mashpee Wampanoag Nation\\’s reputation, economic development, and financial resources, is seen as a significant closure to this dark chapter. “It is my hope that this judgment closes the door on a dark chapter Mr. Cromwell wrote in the Wampanoag\\’s rich, extraordinary and profound history,” Rollins added.
“With this corrupt member gone,” she concluded, “I am hopeful the Tribe will thrive and flourish.”
