Brendan Lawler, Wire Fraud, Massachusetts 2024

BOSTON – A sordid tale of financial chicanery has emerged as Brendan Lawler, 58, and his wife Lisa, 45, both from New Bedford, Mass., face federal charges for allegedly swindling over $700,000 from their clients at BL Insurance Brokerage, LLC.

The couple is accused of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to a charging document. It’s alleged that between March 2023 and March 2024, they solicited insurance payments meant for their clients’ providers but instead kept the funds for personal gain. The Lawlers then employed incoming client money to pay off previous debts, all while giving false assurances of coverage to their unsuspecting clientele.

Lawyers claim that at least 50 individuals or insurance providers were duped by this scheme, a brazen ploy to keep BL Insurance Brokerage afloat. If convicted, the Lawlers face up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and fines reaching $250,000 or twice the total loss.

Today’s arraignment will see the couple appear before federal court in Boston at 3:30 p.m., with U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley and FBI Special Agent Ted E. Docks leading the charge against them. The Massachusetts Division of Insurance and Insurance Fraud Bureau lent crucial support to the investigation.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Cleary is handling the prosecution, a case that underscores the lengths some will go to in the name of financial gain. Despite the allegations, Brendan and Lisa Lawler are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
