Local Man Sentenced for Receipt of Child Pornography
Matthew Carlson, a 40-year-old Omaha man, has been sentenced to 180 months’ imprisonment for receiving child pornography. United States District Judge Brian C. Buescher handed down the sentence, with no parole available in the federal prison system.
Carlson will be on supervised release for the remainder of his life after completing his prison term. In November 2021, federal agents initiated an investigation following a Cybertip from Dropbox, which reported that a user had uploaded child pornography. Agents contacted Carlson, who admitted to receiving a link, accessing the Dropbox account, and viewing the illicit material.
Carlson had two prior convictions for possession of child pornography, further highlighting his egregious actions. The case was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. government to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. This initiative marshals federal, state, and local resources to apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations. United States Attorney Steven Russell announced the sentencing, emphasizing the importance of holding individuals accountable for such heinous crimes.
Through Project Safe Childhood, the U.S. government continues to work tirelessly to protect children from exploitation and abuse. This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of such actions and the commitment to bring perpetrators to justice.
Matthew Carlson’s sentence is a testament to the U.S. government’s dedication to combating child pornography and protecting our nation’s children. As the investigation and prosecution of such cases continue, it is crucial that we remain vigilant in our efforts to prevent child exploitation and ensure justice is served.
This case is a stark reminder that the U.S. government will not tolerate child exploitation and will continue to work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice. The sentence handed down to Carlson is a just outcome, and it serves as a warning to those who would engage in similar activities.
