Child Predator Behind Bars: Matthew Kevin Cowee Faces 97 Months in Prison
Reno, NV – In a major victory for federal and local law enforcement, Matthew Kevin Cowee, 41, of Sparks, Nevada, has been sentenced to 97 months in prison for his guilty plea to receipt of child pornography.
Cowee’s lengthy prison sentence stems from his possession of over 15,000 images and 200 videos containing child pornography on his computer and computer hard drives. As part of his sentence, Cowee will be placed on lifetime supervised release following his release from prison.
This case is a stark reminder that federal and local law enforcement will work together to put child predators behind bars. ‘These lengthy prison sentences should serve as a warning to other child predators,’ said United States Attorney Daniel G. Bogden. ‘We are looking for you, and we will find you, arrest you and ensure that you are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.’
The investigation into Cowee’s crimes was conducted by the Northern Nevada Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which includes the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, the Nevada Attorney General’s Office, and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Carla Higginbotham.
Cowee’s sentence is a significant blow to the child pornography ring in northern Nevada. His prison term is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in the region to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.
As part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Attorney General’s Office, Cowee’s case is a prime example of the efforts to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
