McComb Women Sentenced in Drug Trafficking Case
Two McComb women, Shawanda Matthews and Veronica Thomas, have been sentenced to prison for their roles in a south Mississippi drug trafficking conspiracy.
According to documents, Shawanda Matthews, 31, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. Veronica Thomas, 37, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.
The defendants were charged as the result of a lengthy investigation into a drug trafficking organization operating in south Mississippi. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Safe Streets Task Force in Hattiesburg, along with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Office of the Mississippi State Auditor, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Hattiesburg Police Department.
Natchez, Miss – Shawanda Matthews and Veronica Thomas were sentenced on November 14, 2017, by Senior U.S. District Judge David Bramlette III. The investigation into the drug trafficking organization was a joint effort between multiple law enforcement agencies in south Mississippi.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jerry L. Rushing prosecuted the case, which marked a significant blow to the drug trafficking organization operating in the region. The investigation and subsequent sentencing of the defendants are a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in Mississippi to combatting the scourge of drug trafficking.
Shawanda Matthews is set to begin serving her 18-month sentence, while Veronica Thomas will serve 24 months. Both defendants will be required to complete three years of supervised release upon their release from prison.
