NEW ORLEANS, LA – Mervin Bailey, 20, of New Orleans, is facing a lengthy prison sentence after admitting to a string of brazen carjackings across the city in 2021. Bailey pleaded guilty on October 25, 2022, to multiple federal charges, including carjacking and brandishing a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
The first incident, occurring on June 3, 2021, involved the theft of a BMW X7 SUV. According to court documents, Bailey jumped from a white truck, firearm in hand, as the victim pulled into her driveway. He forcibly removed the woman from her vehicle, demanding her keys before speeding away. The victim, thankfully unharmed, immediately alerted authorities, initiating a high-speed chase that eventually ended with the abandoned vehicle recovered and Bailey found hiding nearby by a K-9 unit.
A search of the area turned up a black CZ-PF10F 9mm Luger handgun with its serial number deliberately obliterated, alongside stolen property belonging to the victim. This wasn’t an isolated incident. Less than four months later, on October 4, 2021, Bailey attempted another carjacking, this time using a ride-sharing app to lure a victim. When the driver arrived in her Kia Optima, Bailey and an accomplice allegedly attempted to seize the vehicle, again brandishing a firearm.
Federal prosecutors are hammering Bailey with serious charges. He faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each of the two carjacking counts (Counts 1 and 3). However, the most significant penalty stems from the firearm charge (Count 2), carrying a mandatory minimum of 7 years imprisonment, potentially extending to a life sentence, to be served consecutively with any other sentences imposed. A $100 special assessment fee will also be levied per count.
The case was a joint effort between the New Orleans Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles D. Strauss. Authorities are framing this prosecution as a key component of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aimed at curbing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and local communities.
“This prosecution demonstrates our commitment to holding violent offenders accountable and making our neighborhoods safer,” stated a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana. While the statement touts community safety, the grim reality remains that Bailey’s actions terrorized victims and contributed to the escalating crime rates plaguing New Orleans. Sentencing is pending, but with the charges and potential penalties, Bailey is likely headed for a significant stretch behind bars.
