Felon Charged with Possessing Firearm in Bogalusa
A 23-year-old Bogalusa man has been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced.
Jakari Brown, also known as Jakari Lemar, was charged in a one-count indictment by a federal grand jury on February 25, 2022, with violating Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(2), according to federal authorities.
According to the indictment, on December 27, 2021, Brown, a convicted felon, illegally possessed a Smith & Wesson Model SW9VE, nine-millimeter pistol.
U.S. Attorney Evans stressed that the indictment is merely a charging document, and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
Under federal law, if convicted, Brown faces up to ten years imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, up to 3 years supervised release, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
The case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, a centerpiece of the nation’s violent crime reduction efforts.
The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Benjamin Myers is handling the prosecution.
The indictment against Brown marks the latest effort to reduce violent crime in the region as part of the PSN Program, which focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
