On October 4, 2022, a routine surveillance operation by the Northeast Missouri Drug Task Force turned into a high-stakes bust when investigators caught John R. Breault, a 40-year-old felon from Palmyra, Missouri, with a cache of methamphetamine, firearms, and cash in La Belle, Missouri. Breault was under watch as he traveled to a home in La Belle to sell meth, and his attempts to flee and resist arrest only added to the evidence against him.
When investigators stopped Breault’s vehicle, they found a staggering amount of contraband, including 381 grams of meth, 282 morphine tablets, marijuana, a 9mm handgun, and $746 in cash. Breault’s desperation to escape was evident as he attacked and kicked a special agent and tried to get his driver to flee. However, his efforts were in vain, and he was eventually taken into custody.
Breault pleaded guilty in April to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The guilty plea was the result of a joint investigation by the Northeast Missouri Drug Task Force, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
On Monday, U.S. District Judge Audrey G. Fleissig sentenced Breault to 11 years in prison for his crimes. The sentence is a significant blow to methamphetamine trafficking in Northeast Missouri, and it serves as a warning to others who would engage in similar activities.
