A major methamphetamine trafficking operation was dismantled in North Carolina when Jonathan Mastache Juarez, a 39-year-old Mexican national, was caught with 1.7 kilograms of 98% pure meth in December 2024. Mastache Juarez, who resided in Sanford, was intercepted by law enforcement after a package containing the meth was mailed to his residence from California. The arrest was the result of a collaborative effort between Homeland Security Investigations, the State Bureau of Investigation, Sanford Police Department, and Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Mastache Juarez pleaded guilty in February 2026 and was sentenced to 156 months in prison, followed by 4 years of supervised release. The sentencing took place on July 10, 2026, before Chief Judge William L. Osteen. The investigation and subsequent conviction highlight the ongoing efforts of federal and state agencies to combat the flow of high-purity methamphetamine into North Carolina.
During the execution of a search warrant, agents found Mastache Juarez in possession of the package, which he had partially opened. Further investigation revealed 200 grams of cocaine, three rifles, and a handgun in his bedroom. The operation demonstrates the effectiveness of federal and state partnerships in targeting those who endanger communities with narcotics and firearms.
The successful collaboration between law enforcement agencies has made Sanford and Lee County safer, according to U.S. Attorney Dan Bishop. The case also underscores the priority given by federal prosecutors to stopping the flow of dangerous drugs trafficked by Mexican organizations.
