Meth Ring Dismantled in O’Brien County
Four individuals involved in a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy in O’Brien County, Iowa were sentenced to federal prison, bringing an end to a case that involved over 270 grams of the highly addictive substance.
Isaac Esquivel, 37, of Sanborn, Iowa, Mackenzie Jellema, 31, of Sioux City, Iowa, Joe Leal, 49, of Hartley, Iowa, and Valerie Ortega, 30, of Sanborn, Iowa, each pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and were sentenced to prison terms.
The case, which was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde, involved a conspiracy that distributed more than 50 grams of actual methamphetamine in the O’Brien County area. Law enforcement made undercover purchases and seizures from the group, totaling 271.78 grams of methamphetamine.
Ortega and Esquivel were sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Donald E. O’Brien, while Leal and Jellema were sentenced by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Esquivel was sentenced to 36 months’ imprisonment and a term of supervised release of two years. Jellema was sentenced to 48 months’ imprisonment, while Leal received 81 months and Ortega got 42 months. Each defendant was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment.
The 5-year term of supervised release that follows the prison term for Jellema, Leal, and Ortega is a harsh penalty, indicating the severity of the crimes committed. The case was investigated by a multi-agency task force that included the Iowa Department of Narcotics Enforcement, Spencer Iowa Police Department, and other local law enforcement agencies.
