Eugene Spears, a 42-year-old from La Crosse, Wisconsin, was caught with over 250 grams of methamphetamine during a traffic stop in Ferryville, Wisconsin on February 28, 2025. Spears, who was out on bond for a state drug case at the time, admitted to intending to sell the meth to multiple individuals. The stop was made after law enforcement learned of Spears’ plans to make a drug transaction. On March 23, 2026, Spears pleaded guilty to possessing 50 grams or more of methamphetamine intended for distribution.
Spear’s substantial substance addiction was cited as a driving factor for his criminality by Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson. However, the judge also noted that Spears’ lengthy criminal history, poor performance on supervision, and escalation in the quantity of drugs he was distributing warranted a long sentence to protect the public and promote deterrence.
The investigation was conducted by the Prairie du Chien Police Department, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, City of La Crosse Police Department, and Wisconsin State Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Ayala prosecuted the case, which is part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Operation Take Back America initiative.
Spear’s sentence includes 6 years in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release. The sentence aims to protect the public and promote deterrence, given Spears’ history and the severity of the crime.
