NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – In a stunning turn of events, 33-year-old Mexican national Gerardo Tejeda-Quiroz faced the music for his illegal reentry into the United States. United States Attorney Peter G. Strasser announced that Tejeda-Quiroz was sentenced on May 8, 2019, for one-count indictment of illegal entry as a removed alien, in violation of Title 18, Section 1326(a).
United States District Court Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon handed down a sentence of time served in prison, followed by two years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment fee. The defendant is now set to face removal proceedings under the watchful eyes of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Court documents revealed that Tejeda-Quiroz had previously been removed from the United States on April 24, 2009, but brazenly reentered without permission.
U.S. Attorney Strasser commended ICE for their diligent investigation in this case. Assistant United States Attorney Jon Maestri was at the helm of the prosecution.
The sentence for Tejeda-Quiroz serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences faced by those who flout immigration laws in the United States.
