A 33-year-old Mexican national has been slapped with federal charges for sneaking back into the United States after being previously deported.
BALTAZAR GARCIA-MENDOZA, a 33-year-old, re-entered the United States after being deported on February 3, 2014, according to the bill of information filed by prosecutors.
Garcia-Mendoza faces a maximum term of two years in prison followed by up to one year of supervised release, as well as a fine of up to $250,000 and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans emphasized that a bill of information is merely a charge, and the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The investigation was led by the United States Customs and Border Protection, with Assistant United States Attorney Jon M. Maestri handling the prosecution.
Garcia-Mendoza’s alleged crime is a serious offense, and if convicted, he could be facing significant time behind bars. The re-entry of a previously removed alien is a federal crime that carries severe penalties.
As the investigation continues, Garcia-Mendoza will have to answer to the court for his alleged actions. The outcome of this case will be closely watched by law enforcement and immigration officials.
U.S. Attorney Evans commended the work of the United States Customs and Border Protection for their efforts in bringing this case to light. The agency’s dedication to enforcing immigration laws is crucial in maintaining national security and public safety.
