Luis Martinez-Torres, Fentanyl Conspiracy, Ohio 2024

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a devastating blow to the fentanyl trade, Luis Martinez-Torres, a 26-year-old Mexican national living in Columbus, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a massive fentanyl conspiracy.

Martinez-Torres, who has been found in the United States illegally three times, was arrested in June 2023 after distributing kilogram quantities of fentanyl to Central Ohio buyers for a supplier in Mexico. The operation was a brazen display of power by the cartels, with Martinez-Torres serving as a key player.

According to court documents, Martinez-Torres would deliver large quantities of fentanyl to buyers after they contacted a dispatch telephone number. In April 2023, he and a co-conspirator possessed or distributed more than 2.7 kilograms of fentanyl, including approximately 6,290 fentanyl pills marked as Oxycodone.

The investigation, which was led by the Department of Homeland Security, involved several local drug task forces, including from Delaware, Hardin, and Union counties. Martinez-Torres was found guilty of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl in January 2024.

Senior U.S. District Court Judge James L. Graham imposed the 10-year sentence on Martinez-Torres, who will face deportation after serving his term. This case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation, which targets the highest-level drug traffickers and money launderers in the country.

The sentencing is a significant victory for law enforcement, who worked tirelessly to disrupt the fentanyl trade in Central Ohio. As the opioid crisis continues to ravage the nation, cases like Martinez-Torres serve as a reminder of the devastating impact of fentanyl on communities across the country.

Assistant United States Attorney Nicole Pakiz prosecuted the case, with the support of U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker and Acting Special Agent in Charge Shawn Gibson of Homeland Security Investigations. The OCDETF, a multi-agency approach that leverages the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, will continue to target the highest-level drug traffickers and dismantle their networks.

As the nation grapples with the fentanyl crisis, cases like Martinez-Torres serve as a stark reminder of the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
