Defendant Sentenced to 10 Years for Possession of Child Sex Abuse Material in Tampa, FL

Tampa, FL – In a disturbing case of child exploitation, U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber has sentenced Michael Alan Schumaker, 57, of Port Richey, Florida, to 10 years in federal prison for possession of child sex abuse material (CSAM).

Schumaker pleaded guilty to the charges on May 16, 2025. The guilty plea came after a thorough investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which uncovered a cyber tip about a user uploading images of CSAM to a social media platform in 2021.

Law enforcement located more than 25 images and 23 videos of CSAM on Schumaker’s cellphone, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction. Schumaker admitted to viewing the CSAM, and his registration as a sex offender prior to the incident makes this case even more egregious.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Courtney Derry. The sentencing marks another success for Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the federal government to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify, rescue, and seek justice for child victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.justice.gov/psc.

The case highlights the importance of continued efforts to combat child exploitation and abuse. As law enforcement agencies continue to work tirelessly to protect children and hold perpetrators accountable, it is essential that the public remains vigilant and reports any suspicious activity to the authorities.

Michael Alan Schumaker’s 10-year sentence serves as a reminder of the severity of the crime and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
