Omaha Man Sentenced to 130 Months for Cocaine Conspiracy

Omaha, NE – In a major blow to the city’s war on drugs, Michael Aponte, 32, of Pennellville, New York, was sentenced to 130 months’ imprisonment for his role in a cocaine conspiracy that led to a 34-pound cocaine bust in Omaha in 2021.

According to court documents, Aponte was found guilty by a jury on May 19, 2022, for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine and possession with intent to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine.

Aponte’s co-conspirator, Rawy Correa-Perez, 31, of Avon Park, Florida, was also sentenced to 97 months’ imprisonment for his role in the conspiracy.

The investigation into the cocaine conspiracy was led by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration, with assistance from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Services Bureau.

During the investigation, deputies stopped a vehicle driven by Aponte for a traffic violation on February 26, 2021. Correa-Perez was a passenger in the vehicle. Deputies deployed a certified drug detection canine, ‘Bezos,’ to perform a sniff around the vehicle, which indicated the presence of narcotics. A search of the vehicle revealed 34 pounds of cocaine hidden in the spare tire.

The electronic data obtained from Apple Inc. for both Aponte and Correa-Perez contained photographs consistent with the drug trade. Special agents from the DEA also provided expert testimony, including that the cocaine had a value of approximately $390,000.

This case serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of cocaine trafficking on our communities. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
