Violent Domestic Violence Lands Saginaw Man 30-Year Prison Sentence

BAY CITY, Mich. – In a shocking display of violent domestic violence, 45-year-old Michael Lee Johnson of Saginaw, Mich., was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in unlawful imprisonment, strangulation of an intimate or dating partner, suffocation of an intimate or dating partner, interstate domestic violence, and six counts of witness tampering.

The sentencing took place on February 9, 2024, in United States District Court in Detroit, presided over by Judge Linda Parker.

The evidence presented during the trial, which concluded on November 1, 2024, revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior by Johnson, who was convicted by a jury. The victim, Johnson’s girlfriend, had broken up with him before returning home from work. Rather than vacate the premises as instructed by his parole agent, Johnson chose to stay and sent a chilling Facebook message that read, “I wanna do something evil.”

Just moments later, Johnson approached the victim from behind, grabbing her and repeatedly throwing her into a wall. He then strangled and suffocated her, causing her to experience difficulty breathing. This was not the end of the assault, as Johnson continued to attack the victim, this time in front of her children. The incidents occurred on the Isabella Reservation in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

The case was investigated by the Saginaw Chippewa Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Roy Kranz and former Assistant United States Attorney Timothy Turkelson prosecuted the case.

Johnson’s actions were a clear attempt to conceal his crimes, and he went so far as to witness tamper in various ways. The victim, an Indian, suffered greatly at the hands of Johnson, and his sentence is a testament to the severity of his crimes.

Johnson’s 30-year prison sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of violent domestic violence. It serves as a warning to those who would engage in similar behavior that they will be held accountable for their actions.
