South Park Resident Sentenced to 11 Years in Prison for Distributing and Possessing Child Sexual Abuse Material

A South Park resident has been sentenced to nearly 11 years in prison for distributing and possessing child sexual abuse material.

On June 3, 2024, Michael Moran, 66, was sentenced to 130 months of incarceration, to be followed by seven years of supervised release, on his convictions of distribution and possession of material depicting the sexual exploitation of minors, announced United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan.

Moran pleaded guilty to the charges in October 2022, following a joint investigation by the FBI and Allegheny County Police that uncovered a large collection of child sexual abuse material on his electronic devices.

According to court documents, in August 2018, Moran uploaded more than 200 images of child sexual assault material to Flickr/SmugMug. Law enforcement officers also discovered multiple computers, tablets, phones, hard drives, and other electronic equipment containing child sexual abuse material at Moran’s South Park residence.

Assistant United States Attorney Jacqueline Brown prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, leading to the successful prosecution of Moran. United States Attorney Olshan commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Allegheny County Police for their investigation.

Senior United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer imposed the sentence after noting the seriousness of Moran’s conduct and the harsh penalties for child pornography offenses. The judge also considered Moran’s admission to having sexually assaulted a minor with autism decades earlier.
