Michael Paul Gillis, Possession of Child Pornography, Florida 2022

A retired Jacksonville school teacher has been sentenced to nearly 6 years in federal prison for possessing videos and images depicting the sexual abuse of young children.

Michael Paul Gillis, 65, was sentenced to 5 years and 10 months in federal prison for possessing images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of young children, including infants and toddlers.

The court also ordered Gillis to serve a 10-year term of supervised release, register as a sex offender, and forfeit his computer media.

Gillis had pleaded guilty to the charges on April 27, 2022, after FBI agents discovered his involvement in accessing a particular online network used to share child sexual abuse materials.

According to court documents, Gillis had been accessing these materials for the past 15 years, and would often view them while employed as a schoolteacher.

During a search warrant executed at Gillis’s home on February 2, 2022, FBI personnel seized several computers containing at least 2,000 images and 150 videos depicting the sexual abuse of young children.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney D. Rodney Brown as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Gillis’s sentence serves as a reminder of the severity of this crime and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable.
