Lexington, Ky. – The grim tapestry of Kentucky’s drug trade was further stained this week as Marvin Hunter Jr., 32, from Pontiac, Michigan, was meted out a 132-month sentence for his involvement in a fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy.
Hunter, a 32-year-old from Pontiac, MI, was caught importing the deadly drugs into Magoffin County. His sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Karen Caldwell on Thursday, reflects the severity of the charges against him – conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, including 500 grams or more of methamphetamine and 40 grams or more of fentanyl.
According to his plea agreement, between August 2021 and March 7, 2024, Hunter was a key figure in the distribution network. He had local associates in Magoffin County who helped him peddle the drugs to dealers and users alike. The operation’s base, a residence in Magoffin County, was uncovered by law enforcement during an April 2023 search that turned up over a kilogram of meth, more than 40 grams of fentanyl, and three firearms.
The DEA utilized a confidential informant to make controlled purchases from Hunter, further solidifying the case against him. His co-defendants, Jennifer Fletcher, 45, and Minnie Johnson, 60, both from Salyersville, Ky., were also sentenced, receiving 84 months each in prison and five years of supervised release.
Hunter is required to serve 85 percent of his sentence under federal law. Once released, he will be under the watchful eye of the U.S. Probation Office for an additional five years.
The investigation was a joint effort by the DEA and the Magoffin County Sheriff’s Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Drew Trimble leading the prosecution on behalf of the United States.
