Deadly Narcotics Sold in New York City

Two men have been charged with distributing protonitazene, a synthetic opioid that is up to three times more potent than fentanyl, in New York City.

MIGUEL DE JESUS REYES MEDINA, 49, of Yonkers, New York, and ERIK ALBERTO LOPEZ VALDEZ, 38, of Camden, New Jersey, were arrested on July 19, 2024 and charged with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and distribution of protonitazene.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the pair sold nearly 500 grams of protonitazene to a confidential source in April 2024. The sale was part of a larger scheme to distribute the deadly narcotic to New Yorkers.

The investigation was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York Division, with assistance from the New York City Police Department.

REYES MEDINA and LOPEZ VALDEZ face significant prison time if convicted. REYES MEDINA is charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison, and two counts of distribution of protonitazene, each of which carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

LOPEZ VALDEZ is charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison, and one count of distribution of protonitazene, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The investigation into REYES MEDINA and LOPEZ VALDEZ is ongoing, and it is unclear how much prison time they may ultimately face.
