⏱ 2 min read

A massive cocaine haul and multiple alien smuggling attempts were busted at the San Diego border this week, federal prosecutors announced. Customs and Border Protection officers sniffed out 61 pounds of cocaine hidden in a vehicle attempting to cross the Otay Mesa Port of Entry on April 24.

Brandon Ramos Bonilla, a Mexican citizen and border crosser card holder, was arrested and charged with Importation of a Controlled Substance in connection with the cocaine discovery. His vehicle was found with the illicit cargo concealed in the roof and firewall.

Two days later, on April 25, the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a smuggling boat off Point Loma with five undocumented Mexican nationals on board. Francisco Ramon Garcia and Antonio Ramos, both Mexican citizens, were arrested and charged with Attempted Bringing in Aliens for Financial Gain. Oscar Orozco Avilar was charged with Attempted Entry after Deportation.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego reported filing 109 border-related cases this week, a testament to the district’s status as the fourth-busiest federal district in the country.
