Hattiesburg Man Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Methamphetamine Trafficking

HATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI – In a significant blow to the local narcotics trade, Miguel McCallum, 43, of Hattiesburg, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his role in a large-scale methamphetamine trafficking operation.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, McCallum was found guilty of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The crime carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, but McCallum received a significantly lighter sentence after pleading guilty on December 13, 2018.

McCallum’s downfall began in May 2018, when DEA agents executed a search warrant at his residence in Hattiesburg. During the search, agents discovered 3 firearms, approximately 3 pounds of marijuana, and a jacket containing 142.8 grams of methamphetamine.

As the investigation unfolded, it became clear that McCallum was a key player in the local methamphetamine trade. His guilty plea marked a significant victory for law enforcement in their efforts to combat the opioid crisis in Mississippi.

U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst praised the work of the DEA and Assistant U.S. Attorney Shundral H. Cole in securing the conviction. ‘This sentence sends a strong message to those involved in the methamphetamine trade,’ Hurst said. ‘We will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle these operations.’

McCallum’s sentence, which includes 240 months in prison and 10 years of supervised release, also includes a $25,000 fine. The case serves as a reminder of the severe consequences faced by those involved in the illicit drug trade.
