Jerry Romero, the kingpin of a Milton, Vermont-based drug ring, has been sentenced to 90 months in federal prison for distributing heroin and cocaine base. The 64-year-old was sentenced by Judge William K. Sessions III, following his guilty plea to possession with intent to distribute both substances.
Court records reveal that Romero, who had previously faced federal supervised release related to a 2017 drug trafficking conviction, was living at 77 Beartrap Road in Milton when he was caught. On September 4, 2018, police and DEA agents executed a search warrant at his residence and uncovered approximately 61 grams of cocaine base and 480 bags of heroin in the bathroom trashcan. A Glock pistol and ammunition were also found in a gun safe.
Romero’s sentence was compounded by a consecutive 24-month term for violating his federal supervised release terms. Over the years, Romero has amassed four other federal felony convictions, including three related to drug trafficking and one involving unlawful possession of a firearm.
Milton Police Chief Steve Laroche praised the collaboration between local law enforcement and federal agencies, stating that the investigation resulted in the largest amount of crack cocaine and heroin seized in the department’s history. Chief Laroche also commended Milton residents for providing vital information leading to Romero’s arrest.
The DEA, Milton Police Department, and ATF jointly investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jon Ophardt and Joe Perella. Romero is represented by Steven Barth of the Federal Public Defenders Office.
