Mission Man Lapses on Sex Offender Registry

A 25-year-old man from Mission, South Dakota, has been sentenced for failing to register as a sex offender, a federal crime. Eugene Featherman was handed a 13-month prison term and five years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on March 31, 2014.

The conviction stems from a period between June 13, 2013, and December 18, 2013, when Featherman, a sex offender required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, knowingly failed to register and update his information.

Featherman was indicted on September 17, 2013, by a federal grand jury for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. He pleaded guilty on February 10, 2014.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers leading the prosecution.

As part of his sentence, Featherman was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Featherman’s conviction serves as a reminder of the importance of registering as a sex offender, as required by law. The Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act aims to protect communities by keeping track of sex offenders and notifying the public of their presence.
