GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Jeffrey W. Provancial, a 27-year-old from Mission, South Dakota, was hit with a severe federal sentence for his brazen failure to register as a sex offender.
The U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons dropped the hammer on Provancial, announcing that he had been sentenced to 14 months behind bars by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on May 28, 2019. The sentence was followed by a daunting 5 years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Provancial’s trouble with the law began when he failed to comply with federal sex offender registration laws between June 13, 2018, and November 2, 2018. His previous conviction for a sex offense in federal court made his continued registration mandatory for life.
His downfall was not swift. Provancial was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 11, 2018, and entered a guilty plea on March 5, 2019. The U.S. Marshals Service took the lead in investigating this case, ensuring that justice was served.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Elmore prosecuted Provancial with vigor, resulting in the severe sentence that will keep him out of trouble for a considerable period. Upon the court’s order, Provancial was immediately handed over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, marking an end to his legal troubles.
Jeffrey W. Provancial’s case serves as a stark reminder of the severity with which federal laws are enforced when it comes to sex offender registration and compliance. The sentence handed down is a testament to the commitment of the justice system to protect communities from such dangerous individuals.
