MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – Mitchell Dale Thompson, 26, of Westville, Oklahoma, will spend the next eight years and five months in federal prison for a violent crime spree that spanned Indian Country and extended behind bars. Thompson was sentenced Friday by Chief Judge Ronald A. White of the Eastern District of Oklahoma, following investigations by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Adair County Sheriff’s Office.
The charges stemmed from two separate incidents. On July 19, 2021, Thompson allegedly strong-armed a victim, brandishing a firearm and making off with their car. Details released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office reveal Thompson demanded the victim’s car keys at gunpoint before speeding away in the stolen vehicle. The initial robbery charge resulted in a 41-month sentence.
But Thompson’s violence didn’t stop with the carjacking. While already detained at the Adair County Detention Center on unrelated charges, Thompson unleashed a brutal attack on a fellow inmate on April 8, 2022. The assault was severe, leaving the victim with multiple skull fractures, prompting a second federal charge of Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.
The second charge carried a heavier penalty: 51 months in prison. Judge White ordered the sentences to run concurrently, meaning Thompson will serve a total of 85 months – just over seven years and one month – behind bars. The crimes occurred within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation Reservation in Adair County, giving the Eastern District of Oklahoma federal jurisdiction.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Gross prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and lengthy sentence. Thompson remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals, awaiting transfer to a designated Bureau of Prisons facility. Federal authorities have indicated Thompson’s sentence is non-parolable, meaning he will serve the full term with no opportunity for early release.
The ATF’s involvement highlights the agency’s ongoing commitment to investigating violent crime in Indian Country. While details regarding the stolen vehicle’s recovery remain scarce, the swift prosecution and sentencing of Thompson send a clear message: armed robbery and prison assaults will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will face the full force of federal law.
