MOBILE, AL – The grim streets of Mobile witnessed a heavy sentence doled out today as Joseph Ambrose Wilburn Jr. was sentenced to 156 months in federal prison for his illegal possession of a firearm. Wilburn, a repeat offender with a history of violent crimes, had been charged with using a gun to kidnap and sexually assault a woman.
According to court documents, the incident unfolded on April 11, 2024, when the Mobile Police Department received intel leading them to an active warrant for Wilburn. A traffic stop led to his arrest, uncovering not one but two additional firearms in his possession.
Wilburn’s criminal record is a litany of previous felony convictions, from domestic violence assaults to reckless endangerment and drug-related offenses. His latest transgression came as no surprise to law enforcement.
The court heard Wilburn’s guilty plea to the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. U.S. District Court Judge Terry F. Moore handed down the severe sentence, accompanied by a 3-year term of supervised release following his prison term.
U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello announced the sentencing as part of Operation Take Back America, a justice department initiative aimed at curbing illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and ensuring community safety. The operation leverages resources from OCDETFs and PSN to streamline enforcement efforts.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Mobile Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica S. Terrill and Jimmy L. Thomas prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States, ensuring justice for Wilburn’s latest victims.
