MOBILE, AL – The grim streets of Mobile were marked by justice as Timothy Jones, a local resident, was sentenced to five years in federal prison for the heinous crime of arson. United States District Judge Jeffrey Beaverstock imposed the sentence earlier today.
Jones’ transgression occurred back in February 2024 when he deliberately set fire to Greer’s Downtown Market at Government and Broad Streets. His actions were caught on surveillance, leading to his swift apprehension nearby. The market was operational with employees and customers inside, though fortunately, the blaze caused no injuries. However, it left behind a trail of destruction.
The 5-year mandatory minimum sentence imposed by Judge Beaverstock was accompanied by a 3-year term of supervised release upon Jones’ discharge from prison. To compensate for the losses suffered, Jones was ordered to pay $25,000 in restitution to the business affected by his actions.
Investigation into the case was carried out by the Mobile Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorneys Beth Stepan and Kasee Heisterhagen prosecuted the case with relentless determination on behalf of the United States.
This sentence serves as a stern reminder that the justice system will not tolerate acts of wanton destruction upon innocent businesses and communities. The grimy realities of crime continue to be brought to light by dedicated law enforcement and legal professionals like those involved in Jones’ conviction.
