COEUR D’ALENE, ID – The echoes of a fallen officer finally reached the courtroom this week as two Post Falls men received sentences for their involvement in the chain of events that led to the brutal killing of Coeur d’Alene Police Sergeant Greg Moore. While not directly pulling the trigger, Nicholace Cane Thomas, 23, and Donald Eugene Shuck, 33, supplied the weapon that ended Moore’s life, and now they’re paying the price.
U.S. Attorney Bart M. Davis announced that U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge sentenced Thomas to 24 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for possession of a stolen firearm. Shuck received 200 hours of community service and five years of probation for acting as an accessory after the fact. The sentences, while seemingly lenient to some, reflect their specific roles in the tragic sequence of events that unfolded in May 2015.
Court records detail a petty burglary gone deadly. In the early hours of April 24, 2015, Shuck and Thomas systematically targeted vehicles in the Post Falls area. Thomas made off with a firearm during the spree, brazenly showing it to Shuck before the pair fled the scene. The stolen weapon wasn’t kept. Thomas quickly traded the gun for methamphetamine, unknowingly setting in motion a cascade of violence.
Just twelve days later, on May 5, 2015, the stolen firearm resurfaced in the hands of Johnathan Renfro, who used it to murder Sergeant Moore. The subsequent investigation painstakingly traced the weapon back to Thomas and Shuck, revealing their crucial link to the devastating crime. While Renfro was ultimately convicted and sentenced to death in 2017, the investigation didn’t stop there, determined to hold all responsible parties accountable.
The investigation was a multi-agency effort, involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Idaho State Police, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, Coeur d’Alene Police Department, Post Falls Police Department, and Idaho Probation and Parole. Their combined efforts ensured that Thomas and Shuck faced justice, even years after the initial tragedy. This case was prosecuted under the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program, a violent crime reduction initiative focusing on the most dangerous offenders.
PSN isn’t just about locking up criminals; it’s a comprehensive strategy that brings together law enforcement, community leaders, and prevention programs to tackle violent crime at its roots. By focusing on both enforcement and long-term solutions, PSN aims to create safer communities and prevent future tragedies like the one that claimed the life of Sergeant Greg Moore. This sentencing serves as a stark reminder: even seemingly minor criminal acts can have deadly consequences, and accountability will be pursued at every level.
