MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Roberto Yamil Velez-Garcia, a 30-year-old Myrtle Beach resident, has entered a guilty plea in federal court for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and distribute heroin and fentanyl.
The case, handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, was the result of an investigation by DEA Florence and the Fifteenth Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit Conway. Evidence from a controlled purchase and subsequent search warrant execution led to Velez-Garcia’s arrest.
In December 2015, agents purchased fentanyl from Velez-Garcia, and in May 2016, they arranged another transaction involving heroin with the help of a coconspirator. Both suspects were arrested after the second purchase.
During the search of an apartment shared by Velez-Garcia and the coconspirator, agents seized approximately 95 grams of heroin and two firearms. The maximum penalty for Velez-Garcia’s crime is 20 years imprisonment and a fine of $1 million.
United States District Judge R. Bryan Harwell will determine the sentence after reviewing the presentence report prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.
Assistant United States Attorney Christopher D. Taylor is prosecuting the case, which has been a stark reminder of the ongoing drug crisis in South Carolina and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to combat it.
