Fort Myers, FL – In a grim turn of events in Florida’s drug war, Giovanni Francois, 23, from Naples, has pleaded guilty to serious charges that include unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon, along with intent to distribute fentanyl and MDMA. The U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced that Francois now faces up to 10 years in federal prison for the firearm charge, while the intent to distribute drugs could land him between 20 and 30 years behind bars.
According to court documents, the saga began in January 2022 when a Collier County Sheriff’s deputy attempted a traffic stop under routine circumstances. The driver, with Francois as a passenger, evaded the authorities. During the pursuit, Francois is said to have thrown items from the vehicle twice. The first discard included a 9mm pistol and evidence of drug packaging, while the second was a cache of drugs including MDMA, cocaine, and fentanyl powder.
Investigation into this case has been a collaborative effort between the Collier County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Morgan is handling the prosecution.
This incident falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence through community engagement and strategic enforcement. The Department of Justice launched an enhanced strategy for PSN in May 2021, focusing on fostering trust, supporting prevention organizations, setting clear enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
Despite the gravity of his charges, a sentencing date has not yet been scheduled for Francois.
