A 26-year-old Natchez man has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Albert Burnell Chatman was sentenced to 18 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for the crime. Chatman had previously been convicted of house burglary and was sentenced to seven years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, but those seven years were suspended, and Chatman was ordered to supervised probation.
The crime was discovered during a routine check by Chatman’s probation officer, who found a firearm in his truck. Chatman was charged in a federal criminal indictment with possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, and he pled guilty on April 29, 2021.
The case was investigated by the Mississippi Department of Corrections, Natchez Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bert Carraway prosecuted the case.
The case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, the centerpiece of the government’s violent crime reduction efforts. PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime.
Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them. As part of this strategy, PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
