Nathan First In Trouble, Sex Offender Registration Failure, South Dakota 2024

PIERRE, SD – The grim halls of justice were once again echoing with the harsh tones of a man who failed to register as a sex offender. Nathan First In Trouble, 45, a resident of White River, South Dakota, was today meted out a severe penalty by Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange in U.S. District Court.

On June 10, 2024, First In Trouble was sentenced to 13 months in federal prison, a sentence that will be followed by five years of supervised release. The court also ordered him to pay a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

This sentence came after First In Trouble’s guilty plea on March 21, 2024, following his indictment by a federal grand jury in December 2023. His transgressions were rooted in two dark convictions from years past: Sexual Contact With a Person Incapable of Consenting and Sexual Abuse of a Minor, both requiring him to comply with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) and South Dakota law.

First In Trouble’s failure to update his registration between July 29, 2022, and December 12, 2023, was a grave oversight. He is now facing the consequences of that oversight.

This case is another chapter in the ongoing battle against child sexual exploitation, part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006. Led by U.S. Attorneys and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, this nationwide effort has led to the location, apprehension, and prosecution of numerous predators.

U.S. Marshals Service and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services were instrumental in this investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher handled the prosecution. First In Trouble was immediately remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.
