A federal judge has sentenced a Tuscaloosa County man to over 15 years in prison for his role in transporting and possessing child pornography.
Nathaniel David Struening, 43, of Buhl, Alabama, was sentenced to 188 months in prison followed by supervised release for life, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s office. Struening was also ordered to pay $20,000 in restitution to the child victims.
Struening pled guilty in November 2023 to one count of transportation of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. The case was investigated by the FBI Birmingham’s Child Exploitation Human Trafficking Task Force, along with the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Division of the FBI, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Homewood Police Department, and Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorney R. Leann White prosecuted the case. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the U.S. Attorney’s office in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Nathaniel David Struening was sentenced on November 2023. He was found to have transported child pornography in a group on the social media application, Kik. Federal search warrants were obtained for Struening’s Kik account and his residence where several electronic devices were seized. Additional child pornography was found in his possession.
The FBI’s operation documented illegal activities and forwarded the documentation for further investigation to the appropriate FBI field office. Struening’s actions are a stark reminder of the dangers of child pornography and the importance of holding those who engage in such activities accountable.
In 2020, the FBI Milwaukee was investigating numerous groups of individuals engaged in the receipt, possession, distribution, and possible production of child sexual abuse material through a proactive operation.
