Slidell man Nathaniel Louis, 45, of New Orleans, Louisiana, has pleaded guilty to trafficking more than a kilogram of heroin across state lines, a high-stakes violation of the Federal Controlled Substances Act. The plea, entered May 2, 2019, before U.S. District Judge Carl J. Barbier, marks a critical win in a long-running federal drug investigation.
Louis admitted to conspiring to possess with intent to distribute—and actually distributing—a kilogram or more of a mixture containing detectable heroin. Evidence presented in court revealed Louis was captured on recorded conversations during a prolonged Title III wiretap authorized by federal investigators, laying bare the operation’s reach and coordination.
The case was spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration, whose Special Agents spent months building the case through surveillance, intercepts, and field work. The wiretap, a rare and powerful tool, allowed prosecutors to tie Louis directly to the drug network’s command structure, leaving little room for denial.
U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser, overseeing the Eastern District of Louisiana, confirmed the plea and emphasized the severity of the crime. “This was not street-level dealing,” Strasser said. “We’re talking about a kilogram-plus of heroin—deadly stuff—that was on the move into communities already ravaged by the opioid crisis.”
Sentencing is set for August 22, 2019. Louis now faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison, with the possibility of life behind bars. He could also be fined up to $10,000,000 and subjected to at least five years of supervised release if ever paroled.
Assistant U.S. Attorney David Haller is prosecuting the case. Federal authorities say this conviction disrupts a major supply channel and sends a message: large-scale heroin traffickers will be hunted down, recorded, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
