NEW ORLEANS, LA – Nathaniel Williams, 27, of New Orleans, is facing a potential lifetime sentence after being indicted on multiple federal charges related to firearms and narcotics, authorities announced Tuesday. The charges stem from an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the New Orleans Police Department.
Williams was formally charged on May 12, 2023, in a three-count indictment. Count one alleges he illegally possessed a firearm as a convicted felon, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(1). Count two accuses him of possessing cocaine with intent to distribute, violating Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1) and (b)(1)(C). The most serious charge, Count three, alleges he possessed a firearm specifically to further his drug trafficking operation, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c)(1)(A).
If convicted on all counts, Williams is looking at a potentially devastating sentence. A conviction on the firearm possession charge (Count 1) carries a maximum of 15 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, and three years of supervised release. The drug charge (Count 2) could land him 20 years behind bars, a $1,000,000 fine, and a minimum of three years of supervised release. But it’s Count three – the firearm-drug link – that carries the most weight: a mandatory minimum of five years, up to life in prison, to be served consecutively to any other sentence, plus a $250,000 fine and five years of supervised release. A $100 special assessment fee will be added to each conviction.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans was quick to caution that the indictment represents accusations, not proof. “The indictment is merely a charge,” Evans stated, “and the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.” The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David Berman of the Violent Crimes Unit.
Federal officials are framing the case as part of the broader “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN) initiative, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaborative efforts between law enforcement and local communities. Launched in 2021, the program focuses on fostering trust, supporting community organizations, and strategic enforcement.
The ATF and NOPD have not released details regarding the specific circumstances of Williams’ arrest or the quantity of cocaine allegedly involved. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available. This is yet another example of the relentless flow of firearms and narcotics flooding the streets of New Orleans, and the federal response aimed at stemming the tide.
