ALBUQUERQUE – A Little Water man has been hit with serious assault charges following a harrowing 2024 shooting incident. Anthony Sandoval, 40, an enrolled member of the Navajo nation, stands accused of assaulting a victim with a rifle on July 29, 2024. According to court documents, the attack left the victim with serious bodily injuries.
Sandoval is facing three counts: assault with a dangerous weapon, assault resulting in serious bodily injury, and using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. If convicted, he could spend up to 10 years behind bars. Sandoval will remain in third party custody until his trial, which has yet to be scheduled.
The charges were announced today by U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Philip Russell, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office. The investigation was led by the Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI, with assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department and Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Marshall is handling the prosecution.
Anthony Sandoval will need to face the music in court as he awaits trial for what could be a decade-long sentence if found guilty. The grim details of this case serve as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking on the streets of Little Water, NM.
The public is reminded that an indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. For more information, view the Indictment (Sandoval).pdf
