Washington — The grim specter of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot has once again come into focus as Jay Robert Thaxton, a 49-year-old member of the Proud Boys from Concord, North Carolina, faces a litany of charges related to his alleged conduct during the harrowing breach of U.S. Capitol grounds.
The defendant is charged with a felony offense of obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder, stemming from events that unfolded as Congress gathered to count electoral votes. Thaxton’s alleged actions, along with those of his cohorts, are said to have caused significant disruption to the joint session.
According to court documents, Thaxton and other Proud Boys converged on the National Mall in preparation for a march around the Capitol building. Footage captures the moment when the group reached the Lower West Plaza, where they joined forces with rioters to breach police lines, ultimately leading to the law enforcement barrier’s collapse.
