A Great Falls, Montana pair, Andrew Dwayne Johnson, 49, and Carrie Jeanine Johnson, 46, were sentenced to prison for stealing checks from their next-door neighbor. The siblings pleaded guilty in January 2026 to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft after law enforcement linked them to a string of forged checks from a Wells Fargo account. The neighbor, who had been hospitalized, had left her checkbook on the couch, which Carrie Johnson later admitted to taking and using without permission.
The investigation began when the neighbor reported false checks being used from her account. Law enforcement found that Carrie Johnson had cashed several of the checks, while Andrew Johnson had cashed one for $1,400. A search warrant served on Andrew Johnson’s room turned up evidence of the stolen checks.
The Johnsons were ordered to pay $17,636.40 in restitution and will serve their prison sentences consecutively. Andrew Johnson was sentenced to two years and three months in prison, while Carrie Johnson received a sentence of one year and three months. U.S. District Judge William W. Mercer presided over the case, which was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and investigated by the FBI.
