New Jersey Doctor Sentenced for $1.3M Amtrak Healthcare Scam
NEWARK, N.J. – In a brazen scheme to swindle Amtrak out of millions, a New Jersey doctor has been sentenced to 26 months in prison for healthcare fraud.
Muhammad Mirza, 51, of Cedar Grove, New Jersey, had previously pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. Mirza’s scheme to bilk Amtrak of $1.3 million in fraudulent claims has finally come to an end.
According to court documents, from April 2017 through June 2022, Mirza and his co-conspirators submitted false and fraudulent claims to the Amtrak healthcare plan for services that either were never provided or were medically unnecessary. They even went so far as to recruit Amtrak employees to participate in the scam by paying them to allow the conspirators to use their patient and insurance information to submit false claims.
Mirza and his co-conspirators submitted a total of over 1,300 false and fraudulent claims, causing Amtrak losses of more than $1.3 million. In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Judge Madeline Cox Arleo sentenced Mirza to two years of supervised release and ordered him to pay restitution of $1.37 million.
The investigation into Mirza’s scheme was led by the Amtrak Office of Inspector General, the DEA, and the Amtrak Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine M. Romano represented the government in the case.
Mirza’s actions are a stark reminder of the pervasive problem of healthcare fraud in this country. It’s a crime that not only hurts individuals, but also undermines the integrity of our healthcare system. Mirza’s sentence should serve as a warning to others who would seek to exploit our system for personal gain.
The case is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement to root out healthcare fraud and bring perpetrators to justice. The people of New Jersey deserve better than to have their taxpayer dollars squandered on frivolous and false claims.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger praised the work of the law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation, saying, ‘The sentence imposed today sends a clear message that healthcare fraud will not be tolerated.’
