New London Man Sentenced for Violating Supervised Release
NEW HAVEN, CT – ANTHONY WHITLEY, 38, of New London, was sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment for violating the conditions of his federal supervised release, Acting United States Attorney Leonard C. Boyle announced today.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Whitley was initially released from prison on September 24, 2020, after being granted compassionate release due to factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic. He had been serving a 60-month sentence for a 2018 conviction related to the possession and sale of narcotics, including heroin, cocaine, and crack cocaine.
Whitley’s supervised release was revoked in May 2021, after he was arrested and charged with interfering with officers/resisting arrest. The arrest followed an alleged controlled purchase of narcotics from him. Whitley has been detained since that time.
Whitley’s criminal history includes eight prior state convictions, including felony convictions for drug and firearm offenses. His prior federal conviction was for a 2018 conviction related to the possession and sale of narcotics, including heroin, cocaine, and crack cocaine, for which he was sentenced to 60 months of imprisonment and four years of supervised release.
“This case demonstrates the serious consequences of violating the conditions of supervised release,” said Acting United States Attorney Leonard C. Boyle. “Mr. Whitley’s actions have put himself and others at risk, and he will now face additional time in prison as a result.”
Whitley’s sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer in New Haven. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Natasha M. Freismuth.
Whitley’s violations of supervised release included possession of a firearm, possession of narcotics, and interference with law enforcement. He was sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment, and will serve his time at a federal correctional facility.
The case is part of a larger effort by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to combat narcotics trafficking and related violent crime in Connecticut.
