Ivan Ballard, Federal Gun Control Act Violation, Louisiana 2023

New Orleans, Louisiana – In a gritty turn of justice, Ivan Ballard, 21, a local resident, was sentenced to 60 months in the Bureau of Prisons for violating the Federal Gun Control Act, according to U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.

Ballard’s crime spree reached its pinnacle when he attempted to hide an AR-15 style rifle under a car during an event at the 4700 block of Erato Street. After police discovered the firearm and apprehended Ballard, his brother tried to discard it but was thwarted by law enforcement.

Records revealed that Ballard had already pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a firearm just weeks prior. His latest offense landed him in federal court for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a charge derived from the state charges and adopted for federal prosecution.

Judge Carl J. Barbier imposed a 60-month sentence followed by three years of supervised release on Ballard. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment fee.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The program, launched in May 2021, focuses on fostering community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, strategic law enforcement, and measuring results.

The investigation into Ballard’s crime was conducted by the New Orleans Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, with Assistant United States Attorney David Haller leading the prosecution.
