NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – Ronnie Davis, a repeat offender with a lengthy rap sheet, admitted in federal court on January 31, 2023, to illegally possessing firearms. Davis, a resident of New Orleans, pleaded guilty before United States District Judge Susie Morgan, facing a significant prison sentence.
The bust unfolded on May 4, 2022, when New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) detectives were tracking a gray Nissan Kicks SUV. Utilizing the city’s Real Time Crime Camera (RTCC) system near Monroe and Belfast Streets, they spotted Davis behind the wheel. A traffic stop was initiated in the 8700 block of Belfast Street, and the results were damning. Officers discovered a black and tan semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine on the driver’s side floorboard, alongside a “Draco” style rifle on the passenger side.
This wasn’t Davis’s first run-in with the law. Public records reveal a 2016 Orleans Parish Criminal District Court conviction under case number 527-901. He previously pleaded guilty to a cocktail of charges: illegal carrying of a weapon with a controlled dangerous substance (LA-RS 14:95(E)), possession of cocaine (LA-RS 40:967(C)), possession of heroin (LA-RS 40:966(C)), and possession with the intent to distribute marijuana (LA-RS 40:966(A)(2)). A clear pattern of disregard for the law, and now, federal consequences.
Davis now faces a maximum sentence of ten (10) years behind bars, a hefty fine of up to $250,000.00, and up to three (3) years of supervised release following his imprisonment. A mandatory $100 special assessment fee will also be levied. This case serves as a stark reminder that possessing firearms while being a convicted felon carries severe penalties under federal law.
Federal authorities emphasize this case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive initiative designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence. Launched in 2021, the program focuses on building trust with communities, supporting local organizations, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and meticulously tracking results.
