New Orleans, LA – Dantrell McZeal, 34, has been sentenced to 105 months imprisonment following a deadly standoff at a local gas station. The ruling was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson on September 10, with Judge Darrel James Papillion imposing the sentence.
McZeal pleaded guilty on May 27 to being a felon in possession of firearms, violating federal statutes. Court documents reveal the incident in July 2022, where McZeal and an unknown shooter exchanged gunfire in the parking lot of a New Orleans gas station. McZeal sustained injuries during the exchange and later struck a light pole after fleeing.
The recovered evidence included nineteen .223 rifle shots fired by McZeal, as well as a semi-automatic rifle with an extended magazine and a Glock pistol with a bullet in the chamber. McZeal’s previous convictions for aggravated battery, aggravated burglary, and two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm make this his third such offense.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Assistant United States Attorney Brittany Reed prosecuted the case with the support of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department.
McZeal’s sentence includes three years of supervised release following his imprisonment, along with a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.00.
