New Orleans Man Jailed for Ammo Snag as Convicted Felon
A 57-month sentence was handed down to Darran Boykins, a New Orleans resident, after he pleaded guilty to possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.
On May 2, 2024, U.S. Chief District Judge Nanette Jolivette Brown delivered the sentence, followed by 3 years of supervised release. Boykins was also ordered to pay a mandatory $100 special assessment fee.
The charge, Count 1 of an indictment, accused Boykins of violating Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(1). Court documents revealed that on March 20, 2021, New Orleans Police Department officers responded to an aggravated assault with a firearm at a residence in the Seventh Ward neighborhood.
during the investigation, officers discovered ammunition in a dresser in the residence, along with Boykins’s Louisiana identification card. Boykins had prior felony convictions punishable by a term of imprisonment in excess of one year, making his ammunition possession illegal.
Recently, in January 2019, Boykins was convicted in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Dawkins of the Violent Crime Unit prosecuted the case. This marks another successful conviction under the PSN program, which aims to strengthen trust and legitimacy in the community, support community-based organizations, and enforce targeted priorities to reduce violent crime.
