Failing to Register as Sex Offender Lands New Orleans Man in Prison
MICHAEL LARRIEU, a 25-year-old resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced to twelve months in prison for failing to register as a sex offender. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Kenneth Allen Polite, Jr.
The prosecution’s case against LARRIEU was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. LARRIEU’s conviction dates back to 2007, when he pled guilty to possession of child pornography in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana.
LARRIEU was sentenced to 40 months imprisonment followed by a lifetime of supervised release. As a result of his conviction, he was required to register as a sex offender pursuant to the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. However, on February 27, 2013, LARRIEU absconded from the Volunteers of America Re-Entry Residential Center in New Orleans.
LARRIEU was eventually located and arrested by the United States Marshals Service on March 25, 2013, in Laredo, Texas. During his arrest, LARRIEU admitted to knowing he had a duty to register as a sex offender, but chose not to do so because he was a fugitive and did not want to return to prison.
The United States Marshals Service investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba handled the prosecution. This case is a stark reminder of the importance of registering as a sex offender and the consequences of failing to do so.
LARRIEU’s sentence is a result of his failure to comply with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, and serves as a warning to others who may be in similar circumstances. The public should be aware that sex offenders who fail to register can face serious consequences, including imprisonment and further restrictions on their freedom.
